     Dr. Yan: The future direction of antihypertensive therapy is aimed at better control of hypertension. By that I mean we need to have 24 hour control of blood pressure levels and we need to achieve target levels of blood pressure control of at least 130/80 in the typical non-diabetic patient. However， the problem with trying to achieve these target levels is that most current single monotherapies fail to achieve these target levels in about 90% of patients. So the current trend， and in fact most of the guidelines recommend it， is to use combination low dose therapies to achieve  target blood pressure levels of 130/80 in non-diabetic patients. For that you need low doses of antihypertensive medications  from at least two different classes – one of the most widely used combinations is calcium channel blockers together with ARBs or ACE inhibitors.
