    :  Research and application of continuous-flow ventricular assist devices is increasing and recent data reported superiority of these devices to pulsatile assist devices to some extent. What is your view of the merits of these two different types of devices?

      Prof. Jessup : The advantages of the non-pulsatile VADs are that they have a smaller imprint so the surgery to implant them is better tolerated and they also accordingly have a decreased infection rate. The original fear was that these devices would not be able to deliver enough cardiac output and I do not think that this has been proven to have been shown. We still have to struggle with right ventricular failure and these devices will not help overcome right ventricular failure anymore than the pulsatile pumps.

    Jessup教授：我认为，非搏动式VAD的优势是手术疤痕更小，因此手术植入的耐受性更好，感染的发生率更低。最初我们担心非搏动式VAD不能产生足够的心输出量，不过到现在也没有证实这一点。目前右心衰竭的治疗还相当棘手，对此非搏动式VAD并不比搏动式VAD更好。
