<International Circulation>: Translating the results from a clinical trial into clinical practice - can you tell us the general principles behind that?

    Prof.Harrington: It’s a great question – how does one take clinical trial data and decide how to interpret that into clinical practice? There are a lot of steps along the way. The first one is to provide to the medical community the information from that clinical study in the peer-reviewed literature where the clinical community can see the scientific information in all of its detail in a very quantitative way. But the story doesn’t stop with the publication of the peer-reviewed literature. A lot of the dissemination then becomes people talking and giving presentations on the data; people talking to people in their local environment about how you might think about the data in the context of your own practice. Then there is the notion of how data gets into the practice guidelines such as those from the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology Guidelines from the European Society of Cardiology. That data then needs to be disseminated. Then the final point to mention is that a tremendous amount of effort is placed， both by the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology， on looking at the uptake of information using registries. That is another excellent way to understand how our therapy is being taken up into clinical practice.
