<International Circultion>: What advice would you give Chinese doctors in the preventative treatment of cardiovascular disease?
Dr Jessup: Well I think that the Chinese are well on their way to grappling with prevention . I think that the Chinese have been very advanced in their reduction of smoking efforts and made a nationwide effort, far faster and more efficiently than we have done in the United States. I also think that the Chinese are grappling with hypertension and realize that it is a potent factor in China and in tackling the efforts to reduce sodium intake which I think is although our food and the foods we eat are very different between China and the United States, for both countries, we still have to struggle with salt and limiting salt intake. The American Heart Association is now recommending that all people reduce their sodium intake to less than 1500mg of sodium a day. That is an enormous challenge for Americans and I suspect it is an enormous challenge for the Chinese as well.
